For over 150 years, Historically Black Colleges and Universities have been pillars of American higher education, creating opportunities and developing leaders across every field. Despite their profound and enduring impact on American society, these institutions continue to face unique challenges in building the financial resources and alumni connections needed to sustain their vital missions.

Methodology

This research combines quantitative and qualitative approaches to provide comprehensive insights into advancement at HBCUs. Quantitative data comes from CASE Insights on Voluntary Support of Education, which has tracked fundraising outcomes at higher education institutions since 1957. Qualitative insights were gathered through surveys and two extended focus groups held in spring 2025 with advancement professionals from participating HBCUs. These conversations explored current advancement strategies, challenges, and innovations in alumni engagement and fundraising. The research was conducted by CASE in collaboration with advancement leaders and was made possible through support from the TIAA Institute.
