The gender division of labor and its effect on retirement security

The Equal Pay Act of 1963 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 aimed to end sex-based discrimination at work and in education. Since the passage of these landmark acts, gender equity has come a long way. But neither Congress nor any state legislature has banned the gendered division of labor, which is largely responsible for segregating women into low-paid occupations and lowering women’s retirement benefits. 

Female-dominated occupations pay less than male-dominated occupations that require the same level of skill.
