Lee M. Lockwood is Professor of Economics at the University of Virginia. His research focuses on public finance, social insurance, the economics of aging, and the economics of AI, especially AI safety. Drawing on price theory and public finance, he studies how policy can steer AI development toward good outcomes.

Lockwood holds a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago, an MSc in economics from the London School of Economics, and a B.S. in industrial engineering and economics from Northwestern University. In 2019 he won the University of Virginia’s Research Achievement Award.
