Describe your first few days at TIAA.
I hadn’t traded U.S. securities, which is a slightly different market, so my first few days were a massive learning experience. I was like a sponge, and I latched myself to a few quantitative Ph.D.s who provided me with all the information they could. I learned a lot.
How do you explain what you do to people outside the industry?
Portfolio managers make decisions to buy and sell stock, and any decision that a portfolio manager makes in the equity business, our team of traders is responsible for executing. Every decision relating to equities is executed on the trading desk, and we are the people who do that on behalf of the portfolio managers.
Which TIAA office do you work in? What do you most enjoy about that location?
I work in San Francisco and I think it’s the most beautiful city in the world. The weather is amazing. There is so much to see -- we live on The Bay, and we have the famous Golden Gate Bridge. Within three hours we have Lake Tahoe, which is fantastic skiing, and an hour away, we have Napa Valley, which has some of the world’s best wine.
