What is life insurance?

Similar to other types of insurance, a life insurance policy is a contract between an individual and an insurance company. By paying an insurance premium, the insurance company promises to pay your surviving beneficiary a sum of money in the event of you passing away while the policy is active. Life insurance proceeds can help provide money to pay off debts—like a mortgage, medical expenses, and student loans—or help replace your income for the people you care about most.

Term life insurance vs. permanent life insurance

The difference between term and permanent life insurance is the length of coverage. Term life insurance is designed to offer coverage for a limited period of time, usually between 10-30 years. Permanent life insurance is designed to offer a lifetime of protection and can include some additional cash growth accumulation.

*Generally, income tax free at the federal level: See IRC Section 101(a). Some states may tax insurance proceeds. You should check with a qualified tax professional for guidance on how you may be impacted.
