Kuanmei began a career as a financial advisor because she wanted to help people. In 1998, she joined TIAA, where she works as a financial consultant helping people plan for their financial goals.
How has your career progressed since you joined TIAA?
I started in an entry level position helping to service the retirement plans of employers with less than 100 employees. After two years, I became a Financial Consultant, working directly with our retirement plan participants. After moving to San Francisco, I took a role working again with employers, but later returned to financial consulting.
Where do your best ideas come from?
My ideas stem from my desire to find the most appropriate way to help my clients achieve their goals. People are more likely to take action towards planning for their future if there are as few hurdles as possible.
Who has inspired you most in your life and why?
My mom is my inspiration – she can do anything, and she never stops learning. Also, Benjamin Franklin inspires me because he is the definition of an innovator.
What does "giving back" mean to you – personally and professionally?
Taking action and volunteering time to something you are passionate about to make society better.
