Stephen (Steve) Gruppo is Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for TIAA. Mr. Gruppo is responsible for the risk management oversight and governance of the enterprise. Through rigorous standards, processes and information, and by fostering a risk-aware culture, Mr. Gruppo and his team promote the proper identification, measurement, assessment and management of risk exposures, both existing and emerging, across the enterprise to ensure that the organization’s risk profile is understood and effectively managed within its risk appetite.
Mr. Gruppo has over 30 years of experience within diversified financial services in executive leadership, corporate strategy and execution, client relationship management, and risk management. Prior to joining TIAA in 2004 and being named Chief Risk Officer for TIAA in February 2009, Mr. Gruppo held management positions at Lehman Brothers, CS First Boston, Kidder, Peabody & Co, and Chase Manhattan Bank, where he was responsible for various areas, including – credit risk management, country risk management, market risk management, institutional bond sales, and institutional relationship management.
Mr. Gruppo is a graduate of Hobart College and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is a member of the North American CRO Council, having served as its Chair and on its Executive Committee, and is a past President of the Buy Side Risk Managers Forum.
