Stephen Gruppo is Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Risk Officer for TIAA. Mr. Gruppo is responsible for the risk management oversight and governance of the enterprise. Through rigorous standards, processes and information, and by fostering a risk-aware culture, Mr. Gruppo and his team promote the proper identification, measurement, assessment and management of risk exposures, both existing and emerging, across the enterprise to ensure that the organization’s risk profile is understood and effectively managed within its risk appetite. 
Mr. Gruppo has over 30 years of experience in risk management. Prior to joining TIAA in 2004, Mr. Gruppo held senior management positions at Lehman Brothers, where he was responsible for various areas, including: credit risk management for all trading, lending, and counterparty credit risk to corporate counterparties, country risk management, as well as market risk management for all fixed income trading.
Earlier in his career, Mr. Gruppo held various positions in credit risk management, institutional bond sales, and institutional relationship management at CS First Boston, Kidder, Peabody & Co, and Chase Manhattan Bank. 
Mr. Gruppo is a graduate of Hobart College and holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics. He is the current Chairman of the North American CRO Council and serves on its Executive Committee. He is also a past President of the Buy Side Risk Managers Forum.
