FAQs about your TIAA accounts

  1. Go to tiaa.org.
  2. Select REGISTER located at the very top right of the page.
  3. Follow the onscreen step-by-step instructions to obtain a user ID and password.

IMPORTANT! There’s one final step to complete your registration. At the bottom of the "Welcome" page, select Log in. For security reasons, this one time only, you’ll be asked a few questions to verify your identity.

Please note that you'll need your Social Security number to complete your registration.

Once you've completed the identity verification steps, you’re all set to manage your TIAA accounts online.

Going forward, just log into your account at tiaa.org.

 

Your contract number is either your TIAA number, your CREF number or your TIAA Mutual Fund Account number. These can be found in two places: your enrollment or mutual fund account confirmation documents or your quarterly statements.

Log in to your account . Look for Retirement plans & IRAs in the MY ACCOUNT menu, then select Research investments to get started.

To review the choices you made for your Investments, Contributions and  Transactions, Log in to your account. Under My Accounts section,

Select the account name or View account details from the Actions dropdown menu to go to the account details pages.

Under Portfolio Summary section, select the Investments tab to track the change since the last quarter.  To see more history, look for your Personal Rate of Return and click "View Details".  A new page with interactive charts provides eight (8) quarters of history for balances and personal rate of return.

Yes.  To see the change in balance for a specific account, Log in to your accountOpen in new window, click the account name then choose the Change in Balance tab.

Your balance includes all of your accounts except these:

  • TIAA Direct® bank accounts
  • Trust accounts at TIAA Trust Company, FSB
  • Trusts you don't own (you might be a co-trustee or executor, for example)
  • Cash value of life insurance policies

FAQs about your portfolio

  • Log in to your accountOpens in a new window. Under My Account, look for the Other Accounts section.
  • Underneath, select Personal Annuities to see your account information.
  • Note: If your After-Tax Annuity is owned by a trust, you cannot view the account online. Call 800-223-1200 for information.

  • Underneath, click Directly Held Mutual Funds. Next, select Purchase Shares and then follow the steps.
  • If we don’t have your bank information, visit our Support tab and click on Online Forms. Find and fill out an Account Services form. An automatic investment plan allows you to deposit a specific amount ($100 or greater) to your mutual fund account either every month or twice a month. Look for this option on your Account Services Agreement Form.

  • Select Manage Investments then select Change My Investments. Make your changes. You will receive an online confirmation of your transaction and later a copy in the mail.

If a vested balance doesn't show, it means an account doesn't subscribe to our service that tracks vested balances. We require that service to ensure the accuracy of the figures.

We update your balances daily with the market closing prices of each investment. This usually occurs by 9:30 p.m. (ET). Occasionally, balances are not updated until the next business day.

FAQs about your contributions

  • Before you can make a contribution, you’ll need to log into TIAA. Once you’re logged in, you’ll automatically be redirected to your Account Home page.
  • Scroll down until you reach My Accounts. Your IRA will be listed in this section. Once you’ve found it, use the Actions dropdown menu to the right to select Make a contribution.
  • Log in to your account.Opens in a new window Under My Account, look for the Retirement Plans & IRAs section.
  • Select Manage Investments. Next, select Change My Investments and choose the IRA. Under Choose the Source Fund (Transfer from), select (a) the fund that you wish to transfer and (b) the dollar or percentage amount of the transfer. Under Transfer to New Portfolio, select the new allocation for the funds that were transferred. Then select Preview Changes to review and submit your transfer.
  • Log in to your accountOpens in a new window. Under My Account, look for the Other Accounts section. Select Directly Held Mutual Funds to manage your mutual funds online.
  • To contribute to mutual funds online, under My Account look under QuickLinks. Click on Contribute to An Account, select Contribute to Your Mutual Fund Account.

We track how much you have contributed to each investment over the lifetime of your account.

When you transfer money from one investment to another or make a withdrawal, the contribution amount is moved or withdrawn.

FAQs about updating or unlocking your account

You can add 3 different layers of additional security when you log in:

  • A one-time code that we send you
  • Touch ID through your iOS device or fingerprint authentication through your Android device
  • Voiceprint identification through

To adjust the security settings on your account:

  • Log inOpens in a new window
  • Select Update profile & settings in the My account menu
  • Select Security profile
  • Choose and save your additional settings
  • Log in to your accountOpens in a new window, Under My Account, look for the Profiles section.
  • Select Update Profile & Settings. Select Security Profile to update security questions and User ID.  To update your phone number, select Personal Information.
  • Log in to your accountOpens in a new window and click on My profile in the top right corner.
  • Choose Personal Information and then select the orange Update your contact information button.
  • Follow the prompts to receive and enter a temporary identification code. For your security, the code must be entered before you can make any updates.
  • When you are finished making updates, select the orange Save my contact information button.

  • Select Update Profile & Settings. Then choose Communication Preferences to review and update your eDelivery preferences.

  • Select Update Profile & Settings.
  • To update your user ID and Password, choose Security Profile.
  • To update your email address, choose Personal Information.

Easily add a new or update existing beneficiary information in just a few steps:

  1. Log in to your accountOpens in a new window on TIAA.org and select My profile in the top right corner.
  2. Choose Add/edit beneficiaries:
  • To add a beneficiary:
    Select the add a beneficiary text and follow the prompts. When you're finished, review your additions and select Submit.
  • To edit beneficiary contact information:
    Select a beneficiary, click on Edit beneficiary information and follow the prompts. When you're finished, select Update.
  • To edit allocations and beneficiary type:
    Select Update account details and make your changes. When you're finished, review and then select Submit.

Please note: Once updates are submitted, they take one business day to process. You will not be able to make changes to the accounts/contracts that list your updated beneficiaries during this time. You'll receive an email when processing is complete.

FAQs about Quicken

Log in to your accountOpens in a new window . Look for Portfolio Summary section, select Investments tab. You will need to either click on the fund or hover over the fund to review fund information.

Select Quicken Download.

  1. Choose Tools menu > Account List.
  2. Click the Edit button next to the brokerage account that you want to convert.
  3. If necessary, in the Account Details dialog change Tax Deferred Status to 'Yes', and Show cash in a checking account to 'No'.
  4. Click the Convert to a 401(k) button. Note: This button displays in the Account Details dialog only for brokerage accounts with the settings described in Step 3 above.
  • Log in to your accountOpens in a new window . Under My Account, look for Retirement Plans & IRAs.  Select Retirement Investments to download historical prices for a select group of funds and select the Export link.  Select the funds from the list and click Export in .CSV Format.
  • If you have a Brokerage account, Under My Account, look for the Brokerage section, select the links within Research to download historical prices for select group of funds.
  • For instructions on importing .CSV files into Quicken, access the Quicken Help section for the version that you use.

  • If you own multiple products with TIAA, a menu will appear that allows you to chart your entire portfolio or your retirement investments only. You can also use the dropdown menu to select one specific account.

  • You should see a list of all your investments and how the balance has changed since the prior quarter. If you have multiple accounts, a dropdown menu will appear that allows you to customize the list.

  • Select the type of account you want. Click the + icon next to the account name to see change in balance, holdings and recent transactions. For additional details, select the account name or View account details from the Actions dropdown menu to go to the account details pages.

  • Send the completed Transaction Routing Request form along with the TIAA cash withdrawal form directly to the TSA Consulting Group. The fax number and mailing address are located on the lower right corner of the Transaction Routing form on page one.

  • Then select Personal Rate of Return or Daily Summary. You can also go to Retirement Plans & IRAs and select Retirement Investments. Select an investment type to get a breakdown by plan.
