How can I establish a 529 plan? TIAA-CREF manages eight state 529 plans and our Independent 529 Plan. Enroll in one of these plans from the Education Savings section by clicking your choice of the Independent 529 Plan or College 529 Savings Plans link. You cannot view your 529 account information directly on our site. You must contact your plan sponsor directly or log into your account on your plan sponsor's 529 website. Is there an easy way to withdraw or transfer money from my TIAA-CREF IRA to establish a 529 plan? You cannot transfer money directly from a TIAA-CREF IRA to a TIAA-CREF-managed 529 plan. You must first request a distribution from your IRA, which is taxable, and then forward the funds to your 529 account.

Before investing in a 529 plan, you should consider whether the state you or your designated beneficiary reside in or have taxable income in has a 529 plan that offers favorable state income tax or other benefits that are only available if you invest in that state's 529 plan. back to top
